IVGID has a disturbing habit of competing with local businesses.

Government is rarely successful at operating businesses and IVGID is no exception.  So why does IVGID operate bars, restaurants, wedding planning, catering, retail sports equipment/apparel shops, etc.?  This is not the purpose of government and this is part of the reason why Incline Village / Crystal Bay is a “company town” and the largest employer in the community.  It is a dangerous situation when a government agency has this much power and influence.

And of course, because of the facility fees, the fact that government does not pay property taxes and does not have to collect sales taxes, IVGID competes unfairly, yet its venues still rarely even cover their true operating costs.

None of the current Board members has ever asked that we consider curtailing any “business” activity, even the ones that are used by only a handful, yet cost the taxpayers more than a comparable service provided by the private sector.
